Telstra has held Australia to ransom for many years, telstra should realise that if they treated their customers well and offered great deals then people will come back in droves.

Telstra's pricing is not the most competitive but the coverage is certainly the best. So depending on where you are it might be your only option.

Another thing to try (I did myself to get a connection working once) is take another Telstra SIM card (got to be Telstra, prepaid or plan doesn't matter) and plug it into the device and try connecting then. If it still doesn't it's something with the device. If it does, it's a problem with the SIM card / account.

Probably the best thing to do would be to contact Telstra directly, they have the best knowledge of these things (much as it pains me to say it).

The things I see going wrong with this most often are problems with drivers; run Windows Update to make sure you have the latest ones. Other than that, make sure you see credit when you check that (click on the $ sign at the top of the Window, read manual for details). If you don't see any credit, Telstra probably didn't do the activation properly.

Yeah, the prices there are completely wacky. No wonder Telstra share prices are awful, nobody in the company can count.

I used to use my phone as a modem as well, but my current phone's USB port is broken and I CBF setting up bluetooth pairing. In addition it's only 2G (GSM/EDGE). Since that review I've sold the dongle onwards to a friend without a phone line.

What I've been doing for phone data is buying 100mb blocks from Telstra at $10 each
http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/prepaid/pluspacks.html
and blue tooth pairing my phone to my MacBook. Notice the price difference from 5mb to 100mb and 100mb to 200mb :P.

Urgh yeah that's what I've heard, it's a great system, but it is so damn expensive. $150 for a USB dongle?! It probably costs $3 to stamp out in the factory.
